Father's Day for Golfers

Father’s Day for Golfers

If your Dad’s a keen golfer (and is there any other kind?) then you’re in luck for Father’s Day.

Golf is a sport of technological change and there are no end of presents that will make Father’s Day special for the golfing Dad, from books at the low end to a new set of golf clubs or the latest Bushnell rangefinder at the high end.

Golfing Books

Let’s start with books.

Most Dads enjoy a good book and a golfing Dad will particularly enjoy one with golf as its focus.

From inspirational golfing books to instructional ones, there are many to choose from. You can give Dad books that will help him drive further and straighter off the tee or ones that will shave strokes off his round by improving his putting.

Golf Clubs: Drivers

There’s no doubt that one of the most satisfying things for a golfer is hitting a great drive off the tee. One that goes a long distance and straight down the middle of the fairway.

There has been so much technological improvement to drivers in the last few years that if Dad hasn’t updated his driver recently, you’ll be giving him a huge help on the golf course is you get him a new driver as a Father’s Day gift.

Driver’s have been improved by both materials and technology.

Materials that allow them to hit the ball further and technology that corrects miss-hits so that the ball flies straighter. Modern drivers also have a higher loft angle than older ones, improving both distance and accuracy.

Golf Clubs: Putters

At the other end of the game, a good putter can cut strokes off every hole. While there’s not much difference between a 180-yard drive and a 200-yard drive, there’s an enormous difference in difficulty between a 6-foot putt and a 12-foot putt. And a stroke counts as a stroke, no matter where it is on the course.

The pro’s say “drive for pleasure, putt for profit” and so they spend more time practising their putting than any other stroke.

Many professional golfers have adopted a stand-up putter, believing that it gives them an edge in lining up the hole accurately.

But whether you give Dad a stand-up putter as a Father’s Day gift or a more traditional but still high-tech putter, he’ll be sure to appreciate it.

Golf Clubs: Irons

And, of course after the drive, you’ve still got to get to the tee before you can reach for the putter.

That’s where a good set of irons comes in.

A consistent middle game, leading to the approach shot that puts the ball on the green is the hallmark of a great golfer. So a good set of irons is really important.

It’s always been traditionally difficult for most amateur golfers to use the lower numbered irons, because of their narrow faces and unforgiving natures.

Many modern golf sets have replaced these difficult irons with fairway woods and hybrids.

If you have a look around at what iron sets are available, you are sure to find a Father’s Day gift that will bring a big improvement to Dad’s middle game.

For the High-Tech Dad

Rangefinders were once thought of as esoteric, but have now become mainstream. Almost an essential for the serious golfer intent on improving their game.

A laser rangefinder measures the distance between the golfer and another object. That object could be a landmark, a tree or (very often) the flag, so that you know exactly how far you need to hit the ball.

Many rangefinders allow for the slope of the ground and prevailing weather conditions and also give physical (a jolt) and audible feedback when the rangefinder is locked onto the flag.

You start off by calibrating your clubs using the rangefinder on a golf range. By hitting a number of shots with each club, and measuring the distance to the ball, you can record what your average distance is for each club.

Then on the golf course, measure the distance to the next landmark or to the flag and know exactly which club you should be using.

Good rangefinders range in price from around $90 to around $500. You can be sure to find one that would make a great Father’s Day gift for your Dad.
